Know More About Balayage vs. Foilyage and Get the Right Hair Highlights Technique for Your Hair

If you’re a woman with brown hair who has always admired the sun-kissed, golden highlights on your lighter-haired friends and you live in Miami, Avant Garde Salon and Spa has great news for you. There’s a new highlight technique and it’s specifically intended for use on darker hair colors. It’s called “Foilyage” and was developed to combine the naturally beautiful look of balayage highlights with the benefits of foil processing.

Here is everything about what the process is for a hair foilyage. Learn which type of hair can reap its benefits and if you are a candidate for a foilyage.

“Foilyage is a technique colorists use when they want to get more lift out of the ends and can’t achieve that with balayage or traditional foils”.

If that sounds a little too complicated already, let’s step back for a second and explain balayage. Colorists turn to this hand-painting hair technique when they want to apply dye or bleach directly to hair in an informal pattern. This gives you a more natural highlighted hair look, and makes your roots less obvious as your natural color grows out. Unlike traditional foil highlights, balayage lightens more slowly, which means there’s less of a chance for breakage. Foilyage uses this same hand-painting technique, but adds foil for added lightening. In the end, you get nice natural-looking highlights.

As great as it sounds, the technician should warn you that it isn’t for everyone.

“This technique is not good for people with fine or blonde hair. There’s more of a possibility that there will be breakage for the hair because it’s going into a foil. And redheads are a case-by-by basis — it just depends on what they want their results to look like.”

Now, knowing more about this new hair highlighting technique, in Avant Garde Salon and Spa we typically recommend Foilyage for our clients who are wanting to see if blondes really do have more fun–and fast! In one session, Foilyage will get you blonder than Balayage, and can lift your color up to four levels. This is due to the application of foils! When lightener is applied to hair with foils, insulated heat quickens the lightening process.

When it comes to taking care of your new highlights, you should use a color-safe shampoo. If your hair color is getting dull or brassy, you can always go to the salon between highlight appointments to get a hair glaze.

Get ready for the new year and get a new look with Miami’s best hair styling and coloring team!
